MLB rumors: Yankees’ Brian Cashman ‘kicking the tires’ on this starting pitcher

We are just days away from turning the calendar to 2019, and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman still has plenty of work to do on the roster for next season.

Of course, he (and everyone else) is playing the waiting game after courting free-agent slugger Manny Machado, who said he will pick his new team in the new year.

The Yankees are in need of bullpen pieces with relievers Zach Britton and David Robertson on the free agency market.

But it’s possible Cashman is still shopping for a starting arm, especially after CC Sabathia’s heart problem was diagnosed this month.

Here’s one name to keep in mind for the Yankees, according to MLB.com’s Will Leitch:

Yusei Kikuchi

The Seibu Lions star was made available to MLB teams at the beginning of December, but it’s been rather quiet since then. It’s possible that Kikuchi is the top starting pitcher on the market, and not surprisingly, the Yankees are still kicking his tires. He has been ready for a while; according to Kyodo News, he has been prepping for so long that he thinks he’ll be able to do his introductory press conference in English.

If Cashman prefers to go the more traditional route, Dallas Keuchel is among the best free-agent pitchers still available.

If Cashman prefers to trade for another pitcher, Cleveland Indians right-handers Corey Kluber and Trevor Bauer, as well as Arizona Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke, could be had for the right price.
