Free agent C Yasmani Grandal turned down big offer from Mets

After making the blockbuster trade for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen continued his aggressive approach this offseason. Finding an everyday catcher was his next move, and he was on the hunt immediately.

Among his list of potential candidates was free agent C Yasmani Grandal, and according to SNY’s Andy Martino, the Mets were very serious about landing the former Dodger.

That seriousness resulted in the Mets making an offer worth $60 million over four years, but Grandal turned it down, The LA Times Jorge Castillo wrote.

The Mets ended up signing free agent Wilson Ramos to a two-year, $19 million deal with a $2 million signing bonus, which was much lower than Grandal’s reported offer. It may have also been the better deal for the Mets, as Ramos had more success at the plate last season than Grandal with a .306 average, 15 homers and 70 RBI. Grandal finished with a .241 average, 24 homers, and 68 RBI in LA last season.

But an even bigger development from this report is the fact that New York was willing to shell out $15 million per season for Grandal, which means they have more money to work with for other needs like outfield or bullpen help.

One name that comes to mind is free agent OF A.J. Pollock, who has been on the Mets’ radar. Pollock’s current ask of a six-year deal is too high for most teams including the Mets to shell out, so maybe they could jump when the price goes down. Van Wagenen admitted “A.J. fits us really well.”

There is also relievers like David Robertson and Adam Ottavino who the Mets could bring in for more bullpen depth.

As for Grandal, it will be interesting to see what he ultimately signs for this offseason, as Van Wagenen put a quality offer out on the table.
